During the FAMU Board of Trustees (BOT) Academic and Student Affairs Committee yesterday, Provost Maurice Eddington told committee members that the University would be revising its enrollment goals (downward) at the the request of the Florida Board of Governors (BOG).
FAMU had hoped to increase its enrollment to 12,000 students by 2020.
"The BOG will only allow for modest growth by retaining the students we admit, and through (increased) community college transfers," said Eddington.
Trustee Nicole Washington, chair of the committee, interjected "essentially, what the BOG is saying is if do really well with the ones (students) you have, then we can have a conversation about growth later."
Eddington said," we'll focus on recruiting and admitting the kinds of students to help us reach our stated goals in terms of quality ---graduation and retention. The kinds of students who can graduate in four years."
The topic came up as the university was revising several of its goals within its "Accountability Plan" which must be approved at the BOG meeting next week.
The committee also moved to reduce the number of "profile" students from 20 percent to 15 percent (about 221 students) of each freshman class. "Profile" students are those who do not meet the university's minimum admissions standards.
