FAMU ended a five-year legal battle with former head football coach Earl Holmes by agreeing to pay him $400,000 according to a settlement agreement filed in Leon County courts on Friday. Holmes’ had been seeking $480,000, theremaining two years on his contract when he was fired, plus $80,000 in attorney fees.
Holmes, a FAMU Hall of Fame linebacker, who went on to play for the Pittsburg Steelers for five years, sued FAMU inJanuary 2015 for breach of contract. He had been named head football coach in January 2013 at yearly salary of$200,000. His head coaching tenure lasted a total of 18 games before he was fired four days before homecoming in2014. His record as head coach was 6-16, included two games as interim head coach in 2012.
Holmes’ settlement may pave the way for a similar agreement with former FAMU Basketball Coach Clemon Johnson. Johnson, a FAMU Hall of Famer who played professionally with the Philadelphia 76ers was fired as Rattler Basketballhead coach after amassing a 32-64 record. He had one year remaining on his contract. Johnson was paid a salary of $150,000 a year.
