Before being dismissed by FAMU AD Bill Hayes last month, track coaches Rey Robinson and Maicel Malone managed to attract some top-caliber recruits despite the extensive wear and tear on the Pete Griffin Track Complex.
FAMU’s Office of Facilities & Construction estimates that the track complex needs a minimum of $235,000 in repairs. It will cost $160,000 to repair the field and $75,000 to fix the track surface.
A completely new surface would run $600,000.
There are also plans to improve the facility’s lighting, which will require $400,000. Renovations to the offices, concession stands, locker rooms, and storage areas carry a price tag of $1,200,000.

I'm confused. This article does say that FAMU intends to fix up the track as the the headline suggest.
ReplyDeleteGood lord man, where is the money coming from?
ReplyDeleteThis is EXTREMELY GOOD NEWS!!
ReplyDeleteI recommend that we fix the track surface FIRST, and then fix the other items. The track surface is horrible and causes injuries. We also need a RACE CLOCK. A track without a race clock is nothing more than a cow pasture.
I think this a great idea. The track is old and needs to be renovated. It will help with recruiting and will lay the early steps for building a wonderful program. Did they name the next coaches yet?
ReplyDeleteMy choice for the next Men's Track Coach is former Rattler sprinter William Al Hayes, if he's interested.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the young kid, Coach Davis? I have spoken with him a few times and he seems very sharp.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Coach Davis. Was he an assistant?
ReplyDeleteAl Hayes is a coach & AD at a middle school. Prior to that, he was an assistant football coach & head basketball coach in a local high school. He has championships on his resume & is highly respected in the community & church. He would make a great track coach.
If I remember correctly he ran for FAMU back in the late 90's early 2000's with Coach Lang and Coach Rey. He was a decent 400/800 guy. Went to the Nike Farm Team out in Palo Alto, California and really obtained a better understanding about track and what it takes to be elite. You can hear a lot of knowledge in the way he speaks and uses physical examples to explain concepts in track.
ReplyDeleteI think his name was Greg Davis. Yes, he was an outstanding track athlete. I never saw him run, but I heard he was outstanding.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure his name is Greg? I think Coach Davis's first name starts with a "T" not sure but I think someone called him TD at FAMU Relays.
ReplyDeleteThere's a Terry Davis who played football for Rudy Hubbard & coached high school track in Atlanta. He's now the AD at Douglass High School in Atlanta. One of his football players, Garrison Smith, is rated the No. 2 Defensive Lineman in the country. He already has more than 50 scholarship offers. Garrison's dad played for NC A & T and his brother, Greg Smith played receiver for Georgia Tech. I heard he's transferring from Tech to either Tenn. State or Jacksonville State.
ReplyDeleteI do not think this guy played football, he is a little small to play football at FAMU and this guy came back from California.
ReplyDeleteIf FAMu can afford a 35% salary increase for the University President then they can afford to up grade the track.
ReplyDeleteHey, someone nominate me! I'm running fast as I can to keep those pesky-assed bill collectors from catching me! I know how to outrun the competition.
ReplyDeleteI think some of the numbers in this blog are wrong, it only cost around $325,000 for a completely new surface at FAMU.
ReplyDeleteDoes FAMU have a new coach yet?
ReplyDeleteFAMU has a beautiful red track already I think that the stands and the area around it is what needs to be fixed up.
