Pharmacy Dean: Budget veto painful but not fatal

FAMU interim pharmacy dean Robert Thomas, said in an interview with the Capital Outlook that Gov. Charlie Crist's veto of phase II contrstruction money for the College of Pharmacy was painful, but not fatal.

Thomas, keeping a positive outlook on things, said “it (the veto) does not kill the project, but it may delay the normal process.” He added that the university administration would request the funding again next year, and expects the construction of Phase II to remain a “university priority.”

The College of Pharmacy must demonstrate to its acrediting body that it has in place a plan to address its space needs.

Gov. Crist vetoed the additonal $7.5 million for construction, included in this year's state budget, because FAMU had not spent any of the $2 million in planning money for the Pharmacy Bldg. phase II it was allocated four years ago.

  1. If Challis Lowe and her former co-conspirators on the BOT really loved this institution the way they often said they did, they'd reach in their purses and call their cronies at KPMG and Dollar General and they'd come up with a $7.5-million donation. Kim Borland and her "international energy company" should be good for at least a million, too, don't you think?!

  2. ...and let's not forget "Lyin' Larry." He and his un-contracted computer buddies ought to be good for at least a "cool million" since FAMU's got to shell out over $4M in payments that were never contracted for.

  3. Cast-Hell should pay FAMU back for whatever it cost to put out that propaganda piece, In Perspective, about her sorry ass administration. She owes FAMU for the cost of this slick surrey to save her legacy and for the bonus she never should have gotten for the phantom $8M surplus. Fact remains: CVB's ADMINISTRATION WAS THE WORST IN FAMU's HISTORY BAR NONE!

  4. I'm sure Corbin and what not would be able to use all that Republican love to scare up some cash for our most high profile program to stay accredited, especially since it was their fault the school is in the muck in the first place.

  6. Crist has lost my vote. Crist not only vetoed the tuition increase that would have given Ammons some much-needed revenue to kick start his presidency, but he's kicking kicks the black man when he is down, in my opinion. This guy needs to go as soon as possible. Resign and run for president or something. Unfortunately, based on his actions to date, Charlie Crist is going to be no kinder to FAMU than Jeb Bush was.

The proposed tuition increase would not have produced more revenue for FAMU. It would have resulted in bigger revenue losses for the university.

FAMU's tuition/fee stats from 2003-present clearly indicate that FAMU students are being priced out of their education. 80% of FAMU's students are on need-based financial aid. When tuition/fees go up, FAMU students respond by taking less credit hours. That hurts FAMU's ability to meet it's required Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) corridor that's set by the State of Florida.

FAMU's inability to meet its FTE corridor has already resulted in a multi-million dollar penalty from the Florida Legislature during the sessions that just ended. Another tuition increase would have simply aggravated the problem.
